Mi-2 light purpose helicopter

18/08/2012 17:25

In the Czech Republůic and former Czechoslovakia following variants of Mi-2 helicopter were in service:

Mi-2T
Main produced transport version (“Transportowy“ – transport) with single flight controls. It can carry one pilot on left front seat and up to 8 passengers or 700 kg cargo inside the load cabin. Up to 800 kg cargo can be carried on the external cargo hook under the fuselage. The helicopter can be fitted with external hoist on the port side, or with the rope ladder. The Mi-2T version was used for military, police and rescue purposes as well as for army transport and liaison flights. By 1998 some 3500 helicopters were produced. Most of Mi-2T are referred to just as Mi-2. Mi-2T serial number begins with „51“ digits.

Mi-2R/SCh
Mi-2R/SCh (the suffix means agricultural - in Poland the letter means „R - Rolniczny“, in Russia the „SCh“ suffix means “Selskachoisyastvyennyi”). This version is equipped with hoppers made of glass fibre composites. They are fitted on the sides of the fuselage. Each of them has a 700 dm³ capacity for solid or dust agents. There are two variants of Mi-2R – for dusting or spraying. Liquid agricultural agents are distributed by pump into special tubular spraying booms with spraying nozzles. From 1969 till 1997 some 600 helicopters were produced. Mi-2R serial number begins with „52“ digits.

Mi-2P
Main produced VIP transport version, mostly with single flight controls. It is also refered to as Mi-2S (especially in Russia, where the S suffix means Saloon), but production plant designs it as “Pasazerski“ – Passenger. Interior was covered by carpets and soundproof plates. Passengers sit on comfortable soft benches. Some helicopters carry a small table inside the load cabin. From 1967 till 1997 some 400 helicopters were produced. Mi-2P serial number begins with „53“ digits.

Mi-2Sz/U
Dual control trainer version for all Mi-2 helicopters. The pilot-instructor sits on right seat, which is equipped with complete flight controls, while the trainee is on the left. It is sometimes referred to as Mi-2U (especially in Russia, where the U suffix means “Utchebnyi” - training), but the production plant refers it to as Mi-2Sz (in polish “Szkolny” – Training). All Mi-2Sz have a 12,5 kg balance weight on the tail skid. From 1968 till 1996 some 400 helicopters were produced. Mi-2Sz serial number begins with „54“ digits.

Mi-2F/FM
Some 30 helicopters were finished in photogrammetric version called Mi-2F/FM („Fotogrametryczny“) from 1971 till 1988. There is a special housing in the rear part of the fuselage containing a LAF WILD RC-8 camera. Mi-2FMs were used especially for cartographic projects. Serial number of civilian helicopters begins with the same digits as Mi-2T, military helicopters has a unique number combination starting at „57“.

Mi-2URP
Mi-2URP (“Uzbrojony w Rakiety Przeciwpancerne” – Carrying antitank guided missiles) is a version based on Mi-2URN. It is equipped with four 9M14M Malyutka ATGMs. Next four rockets are stored inside the load cabin. The NS-23KM remained. From 1975 till 1985 44 helicopters were produced. A few was later upgraded from Mi-2URS. This version used to serve in Poland and in Czechoslovakia (only four helicopters, all were disarmed later).

PZL Kania
This helicopter is based on Mi-2T, but it has new engines Allison 250-C20B in a new motor bed. Changes of the fuselage (new shape of the nose) and of the electrical, fuel, transmission and other systems are so huge, that the production plant refers this version to as a new type - PZL Kania. New engines improved the flight characteristic, especially in mountain or hot conditions. Each engine has separate cowling. The PZL Company planned using of fibre glass main rotor and complete “western” avionics, but some helis serve with honeycomb rotor blades. From 1979 till 1997 only 14 helicopters were made (including one non flying prototype). Most of them used to serve in Poland, some of them in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Venezuela and Cyprus.
